If you are self-employed in NY State there are many options if you join a group as an artist, dancer, visual artist, performer, etc.
It depends what state you are in. I only have information for NY and am not a health provider just a member of a group. If must file a schedule C.

Land of Opportunity!!!!!!!!!!!! now that is a statement.

I have a diabetic son who is 20 and of course he was on my insurance, but as you are ALL aware it is time for him to make his own way. i have tried to find insurance to keep him covered that i can continue to pay for but it is like everything else, you can not survive in America UNLESS you have money, and a lot of it.
I am livid at the American health care system and the Goverment, we can Pore Billions of dollars per day into war in IRAQ and re build cities for other nations as good will gestures that we can not afford, I pay ALL off my taxes and support charitable needs if possible, i have also served my country in time of need, but we can not afford to care and provide for our own people. what do i say TO MY SON, I am sorry that you where born or contracted diabetes but i can not afford to pay for your care this month.
what sort of future does my son have in this land of OPPORTUNITY....I SAY HE HAS NO CHANCE !!!!!!!!!

I write this segment not just for ME but for the other fathers and mothers , grandmothers and ,grandfathers who are experiencing the AMERICAN DREAM as we are.
I prey to god that they will find a cure to this horrific disease NOT just for ME but for all the suffering family,s that are having to endure the same pain as i am .....and i prey that the U.S Goverment does not block or vito any course to help this stricken nations sufferers.

thank you for your time

I am in the exact same situation. After 8 years with a company, due to my health, I could no longer stay. I am 60 and on a cobra plan. I pay $472 a month, that I can not afford and another $125 a month for medication co-pays. Strips for testing and needles are not covered. That is another $150 per month. I am single and very stressed. In CA (where I once lived) they had a state run program. You applied for inssurance on a list and the State had a list of all insurance companies. When each name came to the top of a list, they were matched and the person seeking insurance was allowed to receive insurance without exsisting heath problems or a health check. The insurance company could only charge the fee of a healthy applicant. Now that I live in another state, that is not the case. Why can this not be in every state. We have a nation full of diabetics. Even younger children are becoming type two diabetics. Please place this in your newletter to help others. What happened to strength in numbers.

Dear Alvey,

Thank-you for sending a question to healthinsuranceinfo.net. Unfortunately, healthinsuranceinfo.net does not currently publish "A Consumer Guide To Getting and Keeping Health Insurance" for residents of Puerto Rico.

Generally, state insurance commissioners are always a good place to begin when trying to learn more information about consumer rights and protections related to private health insurance. Direct your inquires to the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance in Puerto Rico at 787-753-1565 or visit them on the web at www.ocs.gobierno.pr/ocspr.

If your questions are related to individual health insurance, call the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance in Puerto Rico and ask for a list of insurers licensed to sell this type of coverage in Puerto Rico and and about your rights when you seek to buy it, keep it and use it.

Questions related to job-based group health insurance, in addition to the Office of the Insurance Commissioner in Puerto Rico, can be directed to the U.S. Department of Labor, Employee Benefits Security Administration, Employee & Employer Assistance Hotline and Publications at (866) 444-EBSA (3272) or visit them on the web at www.dol.gov/ebsa .

Laid off in April '07 at the age of 60. On COBRA for health insurance because I have diabetes (need some kind of insurance for medication). COBRA is r-e-a-l-l-y expensive for a person that is on unemployment.

Something must be done about health care, age discrimination, etc. I really don't want to name everything that is wrong with this world, because you already know. Of course there are no jobs in Michigan and thank God I don't own a home.

Worrying about everyting will give a person a heart attack!!!

Thanks for your response, Lahle Wolfe. We'll update the Utah link we have with the information you provided.

We do not recognize the Idaho High Risk Pool that you reference as a true SHRP. Idaho operates a unique high-risk reinsurance plan. When carriers turn down applicants, they are required to offer those applicants a guaranteed issue plan that is "reinsured" through the state high-risk reinsurance pool. Idaho's reinsurance pool is different from the other state high-risk pools because the coverage is accessed from the carrier that denied the applicant, rather than from the high-risk pool itself.

I think you forgot to include:

Idaho
Idaho Individual High Risk Reinsurance Pool
http://www.doi.state.id.us/
Phone 1-800-721-3272

Also, the link for Utah is to a pop-up ad site. Better to use the state's own information link (from which the link you offer copied from):

Utah
Utah Comprehensive Health Insurance Pool
http://www.ihc.com/xp/ihc/insurance/needinsurance/hiputah.xml
Phone 1-801-442-5000

If you do count Idaho's program the total state count should be 34 states with programs (not 32 as noted above).

Thank you,
Lahle A. Wolfe

First of all I would like to say as someone who sells health insurance for a living I am most grateful for all of the incredibly detailed and valuable information available at Health Insurance Info. Most people have no idea that they could easily end up without health insurance even if they have it through their present employer.

If one has never been sick before, it is difficult to imagine the phenomenology of sickness. It doesn't help either that most people would probably prefer to think about something else anyway, but the fact remains: if you are severly injured are fall critically ill, you probably won't be able to work. If you aren't able to work, unless you have been a dutiful saver over the years (most Americans are not), you will struggle to pay health insurance premiums if they're available to you at all.

This is a rather tragic circumstance because so many otherwise careful, hardworking, responsible people are caught in this trap, and I encounter it everyday. Just because I sell individual health insurance, however, does not mean that I am insensitive to this. I hope that there is health insurance legislative reform. I hope that one day all Americans are covered by some form of health insurance. In one of the richest countries on the planet, this is only right.

The idea of challenging the durational residency requirement on Constitutional grounds is interesting. If the challenge succeeds, however, I wonder if the states that offer guaranteed issue coverage will become inundated from people of other states seeking health insurance. I wonder how long these programs will then exist as they currently operate.
